Just What Are Calories Anyway?
A calorie is a unit of energy found in food that your body uses for fuel, similar to how a car uses gas.1
All foods have calories, but some foods have more than others.
Fat has about nine calories per gram, while protein and carbs have about four calories per gram.2
The number of calories you consume depends upon the type and amount of food you eat.
That's calories in.
When your body uses the energy it has produced from the food you eat, that’s calories out.
Your body burns calories even for basic functions like breathing.
When you’re physically active, whether through regular exercise like cycling, yoga or swimming or just walking down the street, you burn additional calories.3
You should always speak with your healthcare professional prior to starting an exercise routine.
The amount of energy in a calorie is the same for all foods, but the beneficial nutritional content of each food can be different.
When you drink a 12-ounce can of sugary soda, you're consuming about 150 calories and virtually no beneficial nutrients.
For the same amount of calories, you can eat a piece of lean chicken that contains about 26 grams of protein.4
The type of food you eat is important, of course.
Your body needs certain nutrients each day, and being mindful about what you eat helps ensure that you get them.
But it's also important to be mindful about the number of calories you're consuming each day, because calories that you don't use end up getting converted to and stored as fat.5
So it's helpful to count calories when you’re trying to stay on track.
According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), your daily calorie needs may typically range from 1,800 to 2,400 or more depending on your age, gender and activity level.
